Sir Richard Branson on Censorship, Virgin Radio Opening and V Festivals

As I stated in a previous post, I went to meet Sir Richard Branson today and had the chance to ask him few questions. Here’s what I asked and what he told me in brief:
Questions:
1- What do you think about the Lebanese authorities and the way they condemn and ban music, movies and books? Do you find it justifiable specially that you were among the first few people to sponsor and sign controversial bands?

Myself to Blame

I only have myself to blame
for you, my victory, my downfall,
my need, my hunger, my flame...

I only have myself to blame,
hoping endlessly, as my mother
waits for my dad, against hope
for you to change,
for you to become
what I want, to be
somebody else...

I only have myself to blame
for this, the burn that is my life,
this lie that I insist on telling,
waiting, against the odds,
for me to become
someone I want...

From "The Seasons: A Quartet" by Joe Bolton

I can remember as well as September does,
And what music remains inside of me
Is muted over with memory, strains sad
As the seed that spills from the withered okra plants. The best days of summer are the days of summer gone:
Something cooking, a wash of light on the water...
The music dies, and what I hold is the world.
One leaf falling would break the spell. It falls.-from"The Last Nostalgia"

Barbar among CNN’s best kebab joints

barbar_shawarma
CNN chose Barbar among their favorite Kebab joints in the world for the chicken shawarma it offers, and they got it right as Barbar’s shawarma is one of the best in town. Four other joints were chosen from Turkey, Israel, Greece, and Iran.

Lebanese Blogger Physically Assaulted for taking pictures of ruins

I can’t believe they actually attacked him for taking pictures! WTF?
I saw a hole in the fence and tried to take a few shots. Nothing was visible but bulldozers. A man with a walkie talkie saw me and yelled that photos were prohibited. He sent me to the main door. There two men stood, one with greased hair, a white shirt and a metal cap visible in his mouth.
I asked if I could see the site and he refused. “This is private property, no pictures.”

CNN: Barbar one of the world’s Best Kebab Joints

Picture from KevinInTheKingdom
I would have picked Kababji over Barbar.
Beirut is a cosmopolitan city where food standards are high.
When it comes to kebabs, Barbar is a Beirut institution. It’s a snack bar with branches throughout the city, but its flagship store is in trendy Hamra, where it takes up a whole block and overflows with customers night and day.
You can eat almost anything at Barbar and be happy, but the chicken shawarma is the tastiest pint-sized snack.

هوا البلاد

(ink on paper حبر على ورق)

My friend told me: "When you return to Palestine, we shall go together to your village. There, we'll let our hair to the breeze to play with its locks as it desires."
And she left me with my heart racing it to a waft of our homeland's breeze.

Taste Lebanon’s Awesome Lebanese Food Video

I’ve met so many wonderfully amazing people all around the world. Every single one I meet, I invite to come to Lebanon. I try to describe how wonderful parts of it are, how amazing most of its people can be and how delicious our food is. The main selling points are always: history, nature, food and nightlife. However, why would they take my word for it? And it’s hard to describe complex little Lebanon in a few words sometimes.

Getting physically assaulted today at District S site

My chest and wrists still hurt from the arms of the men who tackled me, twisted my hands behind my back, and tried to rip my phone out of my hands this afternoon.

They were enraged because I refused to delete a photo of ancient ruins I shot on their construction site.

"Lock the door," one of the foreman said earlier today, and moments later the giant doors of the site were sealed. I was surrounded by 5 to 6 men looking at me menacingly--prepared it seemed--to do anything to shut me up.

Here's how it all went down:

The Weekly Leaks: The Gärten by Überhaus Opening June 22

My love for Überhaus needs no introduction. I’ve seen most of you there by now, and whenever I can, I’m there Friday-Saturday when I’m in Beirut. I told you about the plans the guys at Uberhaus had to open a summer pop-up club, the first of its kind in Beirut. It’s getting closer and if you are passing by near BIEL today, you probably saw them setting up!

CNN Names Barbar Among the 5 Best Kebab Places in the World

I couldn’t help but chuckle a bit when I saw this. I mean, come on, Barbar is the place you stop at 4:30AM after a night of clubbing when you’re super hungry and your options aren’t that many. But, then again, a good kebab isn’t just the price, presentation, pedigree of the beef, etc. It’s about the most popular one too, the one anyone and everyone can eat, one which without it, Beirut, more specifically Hamra, would not be the same.

Branson: “Virgin Galactic Will Start Sending People to Space in December”

I was one of the very lucky few who got to sit wit Sir Richard Branson earlier today at Beit Misk overlooking a rainy Beirut and got ask him a couple questions. Most of my dear colleagues asked questions related to Virgin Radio Lebanon and business and entrepreneurial questions. I frankly was many times more interested in his exploits of outer space, and asked him a couple of questions about Virgin Galactic

Lebanon Number One on CNN’s List of Best Kebabs

I love it when Lebanon seems to find it’s way on the list of the best foods to find around the world. This time CNN sheds light on Kebabs and don’t we just love it… and Lebanon is number one on the list of TOP 5 places to have Kababs. According to CNN’s Gabrielle Jackson: »more...

Toqa, her hats, her dreams: Life of a 10 year old Syrian refugee in Zaatari camp

A camera at Zaatari camp in Jordan is not very welcome. Syrian refugees who fled the war in Syria and settled there are weary about revealing their identities fearing for family members who remained back home. But this little machine attracts little kids who rush to pose with a victory sign and insist you take their pictures. Toqa was different. She froze. Then she stared deep in the lens, half a tear shivering in the corner of her stunning eyes.

How adorable is this series of animal shaped wood wine racks from Conte-Bleu, a design company based in Seoul, South Korea. The company currently offers animal designs of a reindeer, an elephant, a penguin and a doberman.

The Weekly Leaks: 5 Unannounced Byblos Festival Acts + No Iron Maiden

This leak was tiring. I literally used every single contact I had to try and find out, but for some reason, everyone is being extra tight-lipped this year. But, of course, there’s always a way to find out, and this year’s lineup has a couple of surprises.
1- No Iron Maiden
The Byblos Festival page denied that categorically several times already, so it’s no.

The Hälssen & Lyon tea calendar is the first calendar in the world to feature calendar days made from tea leaves. Finely flavored and pressed until wafer-thin, the 365 calendar days can be individually detached and brewed directly in the cup with hot water. But unfortunately we can’t enjoy them as they were distributed exclusively to »more...

Connecting Lebanon to Cyprus with a bridge

Lebanon Cyprus
Beirut Night Life posted about an American company who’s currently proposing a 150Km bridge connecting Dbayeh to Limassol to allow reaching Cyprus from Lebanon (or vice versa) within 80minutes. Using this bridge will be subject to paying a certain fee, and it will be owned by the American company for the 10 years.
Can you imagine how many things can go wrong if this projects gets approved?

Last September, on a hot summer evening, my wife and I decided to try Chenbao Chinese Restaurant in Downtown Beirut, a place which markets itself as a fine dining Chinese. Indeed it was. I remember that it only needed to fine tune a few small things… Eight months later, visiting Chenbao again, I forgot all »more...

10 Things You Need To Know About Virgin Radio Lebanon + Photos of Their Studios

I can’t stress how happy I am of the leak earlier this year, and how lucky I was that I got on the good side of the guys behind it and apart from getting to meet Sir Richard Branson this week, I got the first scoop into what Virgin Radio Lebanon is gonna be all about, and how, as so many of us have wondered, will it compete in the already over-saturated English-speaking radio channel industry.
Here’s a summary I broke down into an easy-to-read list of what Najy Cherabieh, the General Manager, had to tell me.

Beirut/NTSC is dead long live @BeirutNTSC

This is the last post for Beirut/NTSC! Thank you for accompanying me through this 7 year journey since January 2007! Today I have had an epiphany - blogging is doomed! It came and went and now comes a time for me to revolutionize my online presence. After all, today I have heard it in many ways and many formats that "things change":

@beirutdriveby @ritakml @beirutspring @lenajib Life moves on and things definitely change. Opinions are overrated sometimes.
