DRM Executive Committee member Dr. Mona Fayad will be the guest of Salon al-Sabt on Voice of Lebanon Radio, presented by Wardé, on Saturday March 13th at 8:30 AM (re-run at 8:30 PM).

Despite the obvious canyon separating the perspectives of the March 14 and March 8 political camps regarding their versions of Lebanon’s defense strategy, members of both factions would almost certainly agree on one issue: the National Dialogue process, if left in its present form, will result in no change whatsoever.
When talks about defense strategy are limited to bullets and missiles, tanks and planes, soldiers and fighters, it all really amounts to much ado about nothing.

I spent some time yesterday watching old Sagesse movies back in 1999 when they first won the Asian Championship. I still have goose bumps watching those amazing times.
Those were unforgettable moments for me and many Lebanese and President Choueiri was behind all that. His devotion, commitment, financing and love to the sport and to his people pushed us to the top.

They responded yesterday by replacing the old billboards by the ones below, delivering a new message in the same context.

Depuis que le rond-point de Mkallès et la route de Beit-Méry sont devenus des problèmes de la circulation inextricables, de nombreux habitants du Metn-Sud (lire Hazmieh, Baabda, Mar Takla…) voulant se rendre au Metn-Nord (lire Beit-Méry, Mansourieh…) empruntent la route de la vallée de Qanater Zbeideh, cet aqueduc romain à moitié détruit et qui est un chef-d’œuvre de l’architecture. Sans compter que la vallée elle-même présente un panorama unique entre les deux flancs de montagne où le fleuve de Beyrouth passe au centre.
Et justement, cet engouement pour passer par cette vallée et sous une des arches de l’aqueduc est en train de transformer toute la vallée et de mettre en péril les arches restantes de l’aqueduc.

Antoine Choueiri died yesterday at the age of 69.
First I couldn’t believe the story, because I somehow thought of him as the Heroe in a movie, where he can’t die, and he can’t fall off his horse.
But yet, this is life, immortality is for God only and we are all humans.

Today, Lebanon launched the first session of its much-anticipated “national dialogue” talks. The meeting, held under the auspices of President Michel Suleiman at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, lasted two hours, and everyone who is anyone was there: Hariri, Jumblatt, Aoun, Geagea, Frangieh, Raad (representing Nasrallah), etc.

يذكّرنا اليوم العالمي للمرأة كل عام أن أحوال المرأة في لبنان ليست على ما يرام.
فالتمييز ضدّها في القوانين والممارسات مستمر، وموقعها في الحياة العامة مهمّش تماماً كما حالها في أغلب الأحيان في الحياة الأُسرية وفي منظومة العلاقات الاجتماعية.
ويمكن فهم الأمر بوصفه نتاجاً للقوانين المجحفة بحقها، المتراكمة منذ عقود، من قوانين الأحوال الشخصية الى قانون الجنسية، ومن قانون العقوبات الى قوانين العمل والتقديمات الاجتماعية والصحية.
ويمكن فهمه أيضاً انطلاقاً من الصورة النمطية المقدّمة عن المرأة بوصفها الأم والأخت والزوجة، وليس الكائن المستقل في ذاته بمعزل عن النسب الى علاقة عائلية تفرض أدواراً محدّدة وتفترض علاقات تراتبية تحلّ فيها المرأة – الدور في المرتبة الثانية على الدوام.

Update: Funeral services will take place on Thursday 11th of March in Mar Gerges Cathedral in Beirut at 11 am then will be buried in his hometown in Bcharreh.

Antoine Choueiri has passed away around 14:00 today. He was admitted to the hospital lately due to a pneumonia and had many health issues.

لئن حظيت الفتاوى الدينيّة التي تخالف العقل بقدر من نقد أهل العقل، ومن سخريتهم، فإنّ الاكتراث بـ «الفتاوى» السياسيّة التي تجافي العقل لا يزال يقلّ عن المطلوب.
فمن دون العقل، لا سياسة ولا وطنيّة ولا قضيّة يُحسب لها حساب. الانتصار ينقلب هزيمة والهزيمة تغدو مستقبلاً محكم الإقفال. ذاك أنّ تهافت العقل هو، في الأفكار، ما يعادل تهافت السياسة والدولة والاجتماع في الواقع.
وجه الخطر المباشر أنّ الموقف السياسيّ غير العقلانيّ، مثله مثل الموقف الدينيّ غير العقلانيّ، يؤثّر في حياة الناس وفي موتهم. فإذا كان الموقف السياسيّ صادراً عن منصّة سلطويّة كان تأثيره السلبيّ والتخريبيّ أكبر.

عشية انعقاد طاولة الحوار الوطني، وفي عزّ النقاش حول غاية الطاولة وأهدافها، وإن كان باستطاعتها الوصول إلى توحيد نظرة الأفرقاء السياسيين حول كيفية الدفاع عن لبنان في مواجهة الأخطار المحدقة به، ولاسيما الخطر الإسرائيلي المستمر، يُطرح السؤال: أين أصبحت البحوث التي تضمنها كتاب أعدته مؤسسة الشرق الأدنى والخليج للتحليل العسكري “انيغما”؟
